Some things to think about
Colour palette
- What is the colour you must have in you piece?
- What colours are in the room the item will be in (if its a quilt or a rug)?
- Are there any colours you HATE or that you absolutely ado not want in your piece?
- Try going to Pinterest and looking up colour pallets and saving ones you like for this project.
Fabric Patterns
- Do you have a preference on fabric patterns(small prints, large prints)?
- Do you not care either way?
- Is there a specific Fabric you would like the pice to be focused around?
- would you prefer the fabric patterns be chosen by me or you or both?
Types of Fabric – THERE ARE SOOOOO MANY!!
- This will depend on the project but high quality quitting cotton(100% cotton) is the best for quilts. I prefer to stay away from flannel, minky, broadcloth, muslin, or jersey knit if piecing together the top (unless its a memory quilt then that a while different ball game) because these are fabrics with a lot of movement and will not produce a quality piece for the money you spend when compared with high quality quilting cotton
- For bags or purses we can use 100% cotton, canvas, waterproof canvas or wax canvas, leather faux leather, cork, list goes on 🙂 there just might be more or less stabilizer int he middle depending on the fabric choices.
- For Rugs we can use high quality quilting cotton, or a lightweight canvas. I do not currently have an industrial machine so the way I make rugs I cannot use material that is too thick when folded in multiple layers or my machine may not stitch through it properly, leaving you with an inferior product. I generally make something called Jelly Roll Rugs but I am open to other ideas as well 🙂
Size of piece – Size can matter when it comes to quilts or rugs or even bags and purses!
- Think about what you are using it for
- If its a Quilt
- Is the quilts for decoration or use?
- is it for a wall hanging like a piece of art?
- Is it for the couch/chair or the bed
- Couch/chair = lap quilt
- Bed requires more details 🙂
- what size mattress do you have?
- How much of an over hang do you want?
- Do you want the quilt to cover the pillows and tuck under the pillow while still over hanging the bottom of the mattress?
- do you want it to just cover the top of the mattress?
- If its a Purse or Bag
- What is it being used for? travel, weekend, day use?
- Is it a project back? A gym bag? A computer Bag?
- Where will you be taking it? do you need handles or carrying straps or both?
- What do you want to put in it? how much do you need to put in it?
- Pockets? how many? what kind? type closure for the pockets?
- Type of closure for the bag?
- If its a Rug
- What room will it be in and will a piece of furniture be onto of it, if so what is the size of that furniture and the size of the open space in the room? this will help us calculate size.
- what shape do you want it?
- Is it being used in a space with traffic? will you need nonslip piece underneath?
- If its a Quilt
Quilt patterns – Thousands!
There are thousands of quilt patterns out there to choose from, feel free to check out Pinterest or google and see if any spark any feelings for you. Keep in mind that the colours or fabrics you see can be changed its the pattern your looking at, the colours can also stay the same too :). I will warn you though it can get overwhelming and I highly suggest I help you through this part as I do have some background knowledge that could come in handy. Some patterns can be very intricate and could increase your budget at the same time there are some that look intricate but are actually pretty simple. There are also some patterns you may find that I may not be able to get or that I may have to replicate as best I can if the pattern itself is not retrievable. If we re working with clothing for a memory quilt then we will be limited to the types of patterns we can use as well. Some things you could do to help wean down the selection is to figure out what type of quilts you like, for example, look into traditional quilts, modern quilts, appliqué quilts, panel quilts, crumb quilts, sampler block quilts, monochromatic quits, black and white quilts….I could go on lol. Basically go to Pinterest or google and do some research and see what speaks to you and we can work from there.
